Curriculum Vitae
MAGDALENA RAFECAS was born in Valencia (Spain) in 1968. In 1991 she earned her Degree (“Licenciatura”) in Physics at Universidad de Valencia, and was awarded the Prize for Excellence in Academic Performance. She started her research career in Theoretical Physics, first at the University of Valencia and from 1992 to 1993, at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1994, attracted to the teaching profession, she moved to the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia to work as lecturer in Applied Mathematics. In the following years, among other activities, she devoted herself to the teaching of physics and mathematics, in Prague (Czech Republic) within a Cooperation Programme of the Spanish Ministry of Education, and at the Universität der Bundeswehr München, in Munich (Germany).
Since 1997, Magdalena Rafecas' research focuses on Nuclear Medical Imaging, mainly in Emission Tomography. That year she joined the Instrumentation Group of the Nuclear Medicine Department, at the Klinikums rechts der Isar of the Technische Universität (TU) München. In 1998 she was awarded a 3-year individual Marie-Curie Fellowship of the European Commission to support her doctoral research. After she earned her PhD in 2001 (Summa Cum Laude, European Doctorate of the Universidad de Valencia), she continued her research career at the TU München as a postdoctoral research scientist. In 2004, she brought her research line into the Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC, Valencia) within the frame of a Tenure-Track-Programm of the Spanish Ministry. There she established in 2006 the research group „Physics in Medical Imaging“. In 2011, two years after obtaining the ”Acreditación”, (Spanish equivalent to Habilitation), Magdalena Rafecas was appointed as University Professor (tenured) at the Faculty of Physics, Universidad de Valencia, and in January 2015 she was appointed as Full Professor for Instrumentation in Medical Imaging at the IMT.
